FDA recall: lead-contaminated Rheumacare.
The FDA has announced a nationwide recall of Rheumacare Capsules due to dangerously elevated lead levels detected in the product. Lead exposure is associated with gastrointestinal distress, anemia, neurotoxicity, seizures, coma, and death, particularly in children and pregnant individuals.
Dietary supplements remain a frequent source of unexpected heavy-metal exposure, often due to contamination or adulteration. Clinicians evaluating unexplained abdominal pain, anemia, or neurologic symptoms should routinely ask about supplement use.
Clinical pearl:
“Natural” or “herbal” does not mean safe. Always include supplements in medication histories.
