Hemodialysis Treatment for High-Dose Quetiapine Fumarate Poisoning: A Case Report.

Hemodialysis for High-Dose Quetiapine Poisoning

One atypical antipsychotic known for usually minor side effects is quetiapine. Rarely, though, an overdose might lead to major problems. These could comprise acute kidney damage (AKI) and rhabdomyolysis.
This paper documents a rare incidence of high-dose quetiapine toxicity. The patient, after a high-dose quetiapine, suffered several serious consequences: long QT syndrome, AKI, rhabdomyolysis, and peripheral neuropathy.
The healthcare staff carefully assessed the patient. A kidney biopsy revealed the precise cause of the kidney damage: acute tubulointerstitial injury. Immunohistochemical staining confirmed myoglobin cast nephropathy. This disorder causes myoglobin to build up in kidney tubules, impairing their normal operation.
The patient underwent multiple treatments, including heart rate control, hemodialysis, rehabilitation, and supportive care. Kidney ability returned over time, and hemodialysis was stopped last but first. This example emphasizes how important a renal biopsy is to identify AKI connected to quetiapine overdose. Accurate diagnosis enabled focused treatment. The patient's recuperation underlined the effectiveness of this strategy.
This paper emphasizes in general the need for early and vigorous treatment in quetiapine overdose. Early management lowers the likelihood of other major problems and helps to stop permanent kidney damage. Link: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40207029/
