Recent alerts from U.S. Poison Centers highlight a concerning pattern of severe illnesses linked to Diamond ShruumzTM brand chocolate bars, cones, and gummies. These items, promoted for "microdosing," contain a mixture of non-hallucinogenic mushrooms. Despite lacking magic mushrooms (psilocybin) or other hallucinogens, they present significant health risks due to potentially undisclosed ingredients or harmful contaminants.
As of June 13, 2024, there have been 25 reported cases of illness, with 12 individuals experiencing severe symptoms that required medical attention. Of these, ten were hospitalized, some needing intubation, mechanical ventilation, and intensive care unit (ICU) admission. Thankfully, no deaths have been reported to date.
Individuals who became ill after consuming Diamond ShruumzTM products reported a range of symptoms, including:
Neurological Symptoms: Seizures, central nervous system depression (loss of consciousness, confusion, sleepiness), agitation, hallucinations.
Cardiovascular Symptoms: Irregular heart rates, high or low blood pressure.
Gastrointestinal Symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain.
In collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and various state and local agencies, America's Poison Centers are actively investigating these severe illness cases.
America's Poison Centers advises the public to take the following precautions:
Check Freezers and Pantries: Identify and discard any Diamond ShruumzTM products.
Avoid Consumption: Do not eat, sell, or serve Diamond ShruumzTM chocolate bars, cones, or gummies.
Safe Storage: Store edibles and mushroom-containing products out of children's reach.
Report Adverse Events: Report any adverse reactions to these products to FDA MedWatch.
