The demi lovato stroke episodes left permanent damage to her brain. "I was left with brain damage, and I still deal with the effects of that today," she explained in press interviews [5]. These changes have transformed her everyday life.

The damage to her vision ranks among her biggest challenges. She can't drive legally because of blind spots in her field of vision [1]. Her reading abilities took a major hit too. "It was a big deal when I was able to read out of a book, which was like two months later because my vision was so blurry," she shared [1].

What happened the night Demi Lovato overdosed?

Demi Lovato's life changed forever on July 23, 2018. The devastating turn came after maintaining sobriety for six years. She spent that evening celebrating a friend's birthday in West Hollywood [7]. Pictures on her private Instagram showed her looking happy, yet the events that followed almost ended her life.

Lovato used heroin laced with fentanyl

Her friends left her Hollywood Hills home thinking she would go to bed. She then called her drug dealer [4]. The dealer brought her heroin laced with fentanyl - a synthetic opioid that's 50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine [8]. This combination proves lethal because just .25mg of fentanyl - similar to a grain of salt - can kill [4]. She had already been using a dangerous mix of substances like methamphetamine, molly, marijuana, oxycodone, and alcohol [4].

She was found unconscious and revived with Narcan

The next morning, Lovato's assistant Jordan Jackson came to wake her for an appointment. Jackson found the singer "naked" and "completely blue" [9]. Despite others wanting to hide the overdose, Jackson immediately called 911 [4]. Emergency responders rushed Lovato to Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles [3]. The medical team gave her Narcan, an emergency medication that counters opioid overdose effects [10]. Emergency call recordings showed she remained unconscious when paramedics arrived [10].

Drug dealer allegedly assaulted her during overdose

Lovato later revealed a horrific detail - her drug dealer sexually assaulted her before leaving her alone [9]. "When they found me, I was naked, blue. I was literally left for dead after he took advantage of me," she stated [11]. She told hospital staff the encounter was consensual, remembering just "one flash" of the dealer on top of her [11]. The reality hit her a month after the overdose: "You weren't in any state of mind to make a consensual decision" [11]. Her friend Sirah Mitchell confirmed that the dealer "ended up getting her really high and leaving her for dead" [9].
